Jackson Ford's "
A Sh*tload of Crazy Powers" continues where the previous book in the "Frost Files" series "
Eye of the Sh*t Storm" concluded, with Teagan Frost still on a meth come down, having used her psychokinesis to save hundreds of people from a flash flood caused, indirectly, by her brother and sister, who she'd previously believed dead.
The opening chapter throws us straight into a frantic chase, (which turns out to be a flash forward) and the pace remains frenetic for the first 10 chapters or so, at which point the two main story paths settle into place.
China Shop welcomed me back into their world with open arms and I cherished every second.
There is enough back story exposition that you could get away with reading this book without having read the previous books in the series, but not so much that it's annoying. I would strongly recommend reading the previous books though, they're excellent.
The story is told from both a first person perspective (for Teagan's chapters), and third person for the other main character (to use a name would be a mild spoiler). This approach is managed skillfully, and is never confusing. It helps that the title of each chapter is the name of the current protagonist, but even without that little pointer it's easy to keep track of what is going on.
The members of China Shop continue their character development nicely, with only Africa (the team's driver) feeling a little one-note, despite having a larger role in the previous book. Around the midpoint of the book an event threatens to cause him some kind of impact, but before too long he's reset to default. Something that can perhaps be forgiven in a book this packed, there isn't really space for everyone to have some kind of epiphany or well explored character progression.
That aside, the China Shop family as a whole develops satisfactorily and Ford's writing style leaves you caring about them and their fate, both as a team and as distinct, well drawn, individuals.
"A Sh*tload of Crazy Powers" is a fast-paced, fun and engaging addition to the "Frost Files" which neatly sets up a promised 5th book in the series (well, hinted at... when
@realjacksonfordopen_in_new himself commented on our
Instagram postopen_in_new), which I'm very, very excited to read.
I opened this book expecting to enjoy it, and was not disappointed. The China Shop welcomed me back into their world with open arms and I cherished every second.
Five stars, would recommend.
