Alastair Reynolds Machine Vendetta "Machine Vendetta" by Alastair Reynolds returns to the Revelation Space universe - home of Chasm City, and the Glitter Band - with another "Prefect Dreyfus Emergency" novel.

Set entirely around the orbit of the planet Yellowstone, and following on from the events in 2007's The Prefect (which, incidentally, I accidentally rebought when it was republished as Aurora Rising in 2017) and 2018's Elysium Fire, events in the Glitter Band - a huge collection of habitat satellites functioning as city states - threaten to upset the balance between Aurora and The Clockmaker, two sentient AIs locked in a stalemate, embedded in the computer networks of the Glitter Band.
Events in the Glitter Band threaten to upset the balance between Aurora and The Clockmaker, two sentient AIs locked in a stalemate.

While dealing with the political fallout from an unprovoked attack on a vulnerable habitat and investigating the suspicious death of one of their own, Panoply is already overstretched. This new threat pushes them to breaking point.

Reynolds delivers another masterclass in world building. The Glitter Band is fully realised organised chaos, with individual habitats and their inhabitants being expertly drawn without slowing the story to a crawl with pages of exposition. The main protagonists are largely unique, but maybe a little quick to show willingness to sacrifice themselves on occasion.

As the tension is expertly ramped up throughout the novel, the investigation becomes more urgent, and various hands are forced. Who is manipulating whom?

Just when I thought the novel was about to end - setting up a cliffhanger for the next installment - I realised there were still about 80 pages left. Avoiding spoilers, I'm not sure how I feel about how this book draws to a close, and I'm not entirely convinced by how it played out, but I can also see that, perhaps, it would not have stretched to another book.

Machine Vendetta is an excellent character driven, hard sci-fi, space opera, police procedural that rarely lifts its foot off the gas. It can stand proud along the previous volumes in the series, and will not disappoint fans of Reynolds' previous work, though newcomers may want to start with an earlier entry in the series before venturing into the Glitter Band.

5 stars, recommended.

Machine Vendetta

Panoply is a small, efficient police force, dedicated to maintaining the rule of democracy among the ten thousand disparate city states orbiting the planet Yellowstone.

Ingvar Tench was one of Panoply's most experienced operatives. So why did she walk alone and virtually unarmed into...

Revenger | Alastair Reynolds
"The galaxy has seen great empires rise and fall. Planets have shattered and been remade. Amongst the ruins of alien civilizations, building our own from the rubble, humanity still thrives. And there are vast fortunes to be made, if you know where to find them ... Captain Rackamore and his crew do. It's their business to find the tiny, enigmatic worlds which have been hidden away, booby-trapped, surrounded with layers of protection - and to crack them open for the ancient relics and barely-remembered technologies inside. But while they ply their risky trade with integrity, not everyone is so scrupulous. Adrana and Fura Ness are the newest members of Rackamore's crew, signed on to save their family from bankruptcy. Only Rackamore has enemies, and there might be more waiting for them in space than adventure and fortune: the fabled and feared Bosa Sennen in particular. Revenger is a science fiction adventure story set in the rubble of our solar system in the dark, distant future - a tale of space pirates, buried treasure and phantom weapons, of unspeakable hazards and single-minded heroism ... and of vengeance . ."--

Blue Remembered Earth | Alastair Reynolds

BLUE REMEMBERED EARTH is the first volume in a monumental trilogy tracing the Akinya family across more than ten thousand years of future history ... out beyond the solar system, into interstellar space and the dawn of galactic society.

One hundred and fifty years from now, in a world where Africa is the dominant technological and economic power, and where crime, war, disease and poverty have been banished to history, Geoffrey Akinya wants only one thing: to be left in peace, so that he can continue his studies into the elephants of the Amboseli basin.

But Geoffrey's family, the vast Akinya business empire, has other plans. After the death of Eunice, Geoffrey's grandmother, erstwhile space explorer and entrepreneur, something awkward has come to light on the Moon, and Geoffrey is tasked - well, blackmailed, really - to go up there and make sure the family's name stays suitably unblemished. But little does Geoffrey realise - or anyone else in the family, for that matter - what he's about to unravel.

Eunice's ashes have already have been scattered in sight of Kilimanjaro. But the secrets she died with are about to come back out into the open, and they could change everything.

Or shatter this near-utopia into shards ...

A cutting-edge anthology, published on the 100th anniversary of the word “Robot”, exploring the possibilities and place of robots in society going forwards. 100 years after Karel Capek coined the word, “robots” are an everyday idea, and the inspiration for countless stories in books, film, TV and games. They are often among the least privileged, most unfairly used of us, and the more robots are like humans, the more interesting they become. This collection of stories is where robots stand in for us, where both we and they are disadvantaged, and where hope and optimism shines through. Including stories by: Brooke Bolander · John Chu · Daryl Gregory · Peter F. Hamilton · Saad Z. Hossain · Rich Larson · Ken Liu · Ian R. Macleod · Annalee Newitz · Tochi Onyebuchi · Suzanne Palmer · Sarah Pinsker · Vina Jie-Min Prasad · Alastair Reynolds · Sofia Samatar · Peter Watts
