Following Unute, an immortal warrior born 80,000 years ago - known simply as "B", these days - The Book of Elsewhere finds "B" chasing a dream to be able to die. Not to die quite yet, but at least be able to.
In pursuit of this desire, he has teamed up with a US black-ops group who have promised to help, in return for his assistance. Things get complicated when a killed soldier returns to life, revealing that "B" may not be the only powerful immortal walking the Earth.
China Miéville's writing style may need a bit of a run up... Once acclimatised, his writing is beautiful.
The story is inspired by
Keanu Reeves and
Matt Kindt's BRZRKR graphic novels, which I have not read, and shifts between present day and stories from Unute's past, occasionally told by others whose path he has crossed, the story unfolds satisfyingly across the 300+ pages. I don't feel that not having previously read BRZRKR particularly impacted my enjoyment of this novel.
The modern era spec-ops supporting cast are a little paint-by-numbers, but are serviceable enough. The characters featured in stories from Unute's past are generally more fleshed out - particularly that of a long dead ex-wife - and help fuel the narrative of how he has (or hasn't) changed over his existence, and how his path through history has impacted the religions and mythology surrounding him.
China Miéville's writing style may need a bit of a run up. His prose could be described as flowery, if the flower was a thistle, and requires a little time to tune into. This could be offputting to new readers unfamiliar with his work, but I would encourage them to persevere. Once acclimatised, his writing is beautiful.
If you're looking for an action filled, easy read maybe give this one a miss. If you're looking for an action filled, challenging read with philosophical undercurrents and 80,000 years of weight on its shoulders (and the dense prose to match), this may be the book for you, particularly if you have enjoyed Miéville's work in the past.
4 Stars. Only the paper-thin present day supporting cast keep it from a 5.
